The Mundane™
While spending countless of hours in my bedroom amidst the COVID-19 crisis, I started to become hyperaware of the many mindless, "mundane" interactions I would have with the products that made up my daily routine. Whether it be turning on my desk lamp, toasting my bread, or making my morning coffee, I was doing so on auto-pilot. Thus, in this summer-long project, I took it upon myself to try and reimagine these mundane interactions in ways that would make the user stop and think for a second, or at the very least, create a momentary sense of excitement in an otherwise anticlimactic activity.
Each of the projects below is the result of a week-long sprint, using a mix of digital (Solidworks, Keyshot, Photoshop) and physical prototyping tools.
BlockLights
Inspired by toy blocks, I wanted to explore a more playful and enjoyable way of creating light. The blocks would use an internal magnet to attach to each other, and, in turn, send power to the LED inside. Thus, the user has control over what their "lamp" looks like and how much light is ultimately being emitted.
You can find some of my initial sketches and a physical paper prototype I created below.
Mr. Sharp
A simple and playful electric sharpener to replace the black plastic box sitting on your desk. With magnetic feet, this dude can stand upright on a desk top or be wall mounted on any metallic board.
Un-useless Object
A rendering exercise assigning materials and context to a random model provided.
